Solution to the Rectangle on a Hexagon Puzzle

Rectangle on a Hexagon

The area of the regular hexagon is 3030. What’s the area of the rectangle?

Solution by Dissection

Rectangle on a hexagon labelled

In the above diagram, triangles GHFG H F and EBDE B D are congruent so the rectangle has the same area as parallelogram HBDFH B D F. Then triangles FCDF C D and HABH A B are congruent, so the rectangle has the same area as the rectangle HACFH A C F. From the properties of a regular hexagon, this rectangle comprises four of the six equilateral triangles that make up the hexagon, so its area is 46×30=20\frac{4}{6} \times 30 = 20.

Solution by Shearing

Shear the rectangle parallel to HBH B so that GG ends up at FF, then shear the resulting parallelogram parallel to HFH F so that BB ends up at AA. This shows that the shaded rectangle has the same area as HACFH A C F.

Solution by Invariance Principle

The shaded rectangle can be drawn with BB at any point between AA and CC. In particular, it can be drawn with BB at AA which results in the rectangle HACFH A C F.
