angles in two circles solution

Solution to the Angles in Two Circles Puzzle

Angles in Two Circles

What’s the sum of the two marked angles?

Solution by the Alternate Segment Theorem and Angles in a Triangle

Angles in two circles labelled

With the points labelled as above, the alternate segment theorem gives that both angles CB^DC \hat{B} D and BC^DB \hat{C} D are both aa while CA^DC \hat{A} D and DC^AD \hat{C} A are both bb. As angles in a triangle add up to 180 180^\circ, considering triangle ABCA B C shows that a+a+b+b=180 a + a + b + b = 180^\circ, and so a+b=90 a + b = 90^\circ.
