## Definition

###### Definition

The **median** of a population or a sample of a population is a measure of central tendency. It is the middle value when the data is ordered.

Specifically, let $n$ be the number of data points and let $x_1, \dots, x_n$ be the data in order. Calculate $r = \frac{n+1}2$.

- If $r$ is an integer?, the
**median** is $x_r$
- If $r$ is not an integer?, the
**median** is the mean of the two values either side of $r$.

## Spreadsheet

In a spreadsheet, the formula to calculate the mean of a range is:

`=median(<range>)`
