The median of a population or a sample of a population is a measure of central tendency. It is the middle value when the data is ordered.

Specifically, let nn be the number of data points and let x 1,,x nx_1, \dots, x_n be the data in order. Calculate r=n+12r = \frac{n+1}2.

  • If rr is an integer?, the median is x rx_r
  • If rr is not an integer?, the median is the mean of the two values either side of rr.
