two semi-circles and a rectangle solution

Solution to the Two Semi-Circles and a Rectangle Puzzle

Two Semi-Circles and a Rectangle

A horizontal line of length 88 joins these semicircles. What’s the area of the rectangle?

Solution by the Intersecting Chords Theorem

Two semi-circles and a rectangle labelled

With the points labelled as above, let aa be the length of APA P and bb the radius of the smaller semi-circle, so the length of BPB P. The area of the rectangle is then aba b. Applying the intersecting chords theorem to APA P and CPC P shows that ab=8 2a b = 8^2. So the area of the rectangle is 6464.
