Three Stacked Squares and a Fourth Square

Three Stacked Squares and a Fourth Square

The three small squares each have area 44. What’s the total shaded area?

Solution by Congruent Triangles

Three stacked squares and a fourth square labelled

With the points labelled as above, angles AC^BA \hat{C} B and EC^DE \hat{C} D are equal and so triangles EDCE D C and ABCA B C are congruent. The shaded area is therefore equivalent in area to two squares. The total shaded area is therefore 88.
