Solution to the Three Congruent Rectangles VI Puzzle

Three congruent rectangles VI

The three rectangles are congruent. What fraction of the design is shaded?

Solution by Area of a Triangle and Congruent Triangles

Three congruent rectangles vi labelled

Consider the diagram labelled as above. Triangles AHGA H G and AHFA H F share the base AHA H, and as FGF G is parallel to AHA H, the points FF and GG have the same perpendicular distance to AHA H, so triangles AHGA H G and AHFA H F have the same area.

Since the rectangles are congruent, line segments CFC F and BHB H have the same length, so so do CBC B and FHF H. Therefore AFA F is parallel to BDB D. Since also AHA H and DCD C have the same length then triangles DBED B E and AFEA F E are congruent.

The white regions therefore have the same area as triangle ABHA B H, which comprises one half of one of the rectangles and so one sixth of the design.
