Solution to the Overlapping Triangles Puzzle

Overlapping Triangles

When I place two 3453-4-5 triangles like this, what’s the overlapping area?

Solution by Properties of a Rectangle

Overlapping triangles labelled

In the above diagram, ABCDA B C D is a rectangle. Since angle BA^FB \hat{A} F is the same as angle DB^AD \hat{B} A as the triangles are similar, so AFA F lies along the diagonal of the rectangle and AFCA F C is a straight line. The point GG is where the diagonals cross so is the centre of the rectangle. Therefore triangle ABGA B G is a quarter of the rectangle. As the sides of the rectangle are 33 and 44, its area is 1212 so the overlapping region has area 33.
