Overlapping Square and Circle

What’s the area of the square?

Solution by Intersecting Chords Theorem

Overlapping square and circle labelled

Let xx be half the side length of the square. Then CPC P and PDP D both have length xx, while APA P has length 2x2 x. Applying the intersecting chords theorem shows that 1×2x=x×x1 \times 2 x = x \times x so x=2x = 2. The side length of the square is then 44, so its area is 1616.
