A circle and two squares. What’s the area of the circle?

In the above diagram, the point labelled OO is the centre of the circle. Since the angle in a semi-circle is a right-angle, AEA E is a diameter of the circle, and so passes through OO as shown.

Triangle ADCA D C is obtained by rotating triangle AFEA F E by 90 90^\circ clockwise, so ACA C is the continuation of ABA B. Since the length of ABA B is the same as a radius of the circle, the rotation takes OO to BB. Therefore, the line segment OFO F is taken to BDB D and so they have the same length. The circle therefore has radius 22 and area 4π4 \pi.
