Solution to the Six Rectangles Puzzle

Six Rectangles

6 congruent rectangles. What’s the angle?

Solution by Properties of Isosceles Right-angled Triangles and Corresponding Angles in Parallel Lines

Six rectangles labelled

Consider the diagram labelled as above. By considering rectangle DEFGD E F G, the sides of the rectangle must be in the ratio 1:21 : 2. Therefore, line segments EHE H and BDB D have the same length, as to ABA B and DED E. Triangle ABDA B D and DEHD E H are therefore related by a rotation of 90 90^\circ, so angle HD^AH \hat{D} A is 90 90^\circ.

This means that triangle ADHA D H is an isosceles right-angled triangle. In particular, angle AH^DA \hat{H} D is 45 45^\circ. Since line segments ICI C and HDH D are parallel, this means that angle AJ^CA \hat{J} C is also 45 45^\circ since corresponding angles are equal.

Therefore, angle IJ^AI \hat{J} A is 135 135^\circ.
