Quadratic Equations

A quadratic equation in a variable, say xx, is an equation in which xx appears in terms only as x 2x^2, as xx, or not at all.

A quadratic equation in xx can be rearranged to be of the form:

ax 2+bx+c=0 a x^2 + b x + c = 0

where aa, bb, and cc do not involve xx.

Solutions

The solutions – if they exist – of the quadratic equation ax 2+bx+c=0a x^2 + b x + c = 0 are given by the quadratic formula:

x=b±b 24ac2a x = \frac{ - b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4 a c }}{2 a}
